This is an ongoing project in the back of Kalihi Valley. My present role has been to document the structure as it currently sits. Later construction and design documents will follow.
Originally the home of local architect Naoto Inada, the building has been abandoned since it burned almost 40 years ago. It has become the site of littering and vandalism. Much work has been done to clear the site and consider its unique potential to be resurrected again.
This proposal to Minneapolis architecture firm CityDesk Studios was to repurpose a decommissioned 83-foot skyway as a bike hub and park. Originally there was little incentive for bicyclists commuting via the Dinkytown Greenway to stop or rest.
The benefit of this plan was to leave the structure where it was and therefore reduce moving costs. It was a unique coincidence for a skyway structure to sit on an empty field and I sought to preserve that sculptural identity.
